The manual is not dedicated solely to the use of SIMPLEX, but it should help in getting a good idea of how the utilities works. Furthermore, the manual keeps the support in mind. Especially when referring to previous versions of the program, it provides the necessary information to continue using the application. The file list is organized according to protocols and demodulator types.
Though Mac OS X is the operating system on which SIMPLEX runs, the version for Windows is also available, which does not significantly change the program. Either way, the MAC version runs on a solid foundation. The inclusion of a memory map is a nice touch, too, and the interface is a smooth experience, to say the least.
Getting a grip on the program’s interface is easy. Command + a mouse click will pan the available radio hardware. However, a lot of commands are left untouched by simply double clicking a radio. A handful of adjustments are possible through the main menu. For example, recording can be set up through the Edit Preferences dialog and the Align List can be activated or deactivated from the Options menu. Also, the Status Menu provides a handy way of switching between variables and searches, such as recording levels and repeater types.
By activating the Sys Info function from the Help menu, some basic system statistics are presented. According to the included profile, the program is written in C++ and uses Mac OS X’s Cocoa to build the user interface. Notably, the programming language is quite readable and logical, especially considering the fact that the programmer had to keep support in mind. The program has a similar feel to iTunes and RecordStream.
The Include Profile is located in the File menu, and it allows for the importation of previously recorded files. It works as it is intended to and is much more efficient than the importation process of the Raw Data dialog.
