The ancient proteins also allowed the scientists to build a timeline for life on Earth.
The research, published in the journal Science Advances, could help scientists narrow down the number of potential life-hosting environments out there.
“Our goal was to see if we could find patterns in the protein sequences that reveal their possible life-hosting environments,” said John Kresnow, the study’s lead author and a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. “The rest is kind of a beautiful story.”
Researchers have long been puzzled by how many environments support life, but the most famous “goldilocks zone” came into effect during the reign of rocks, called the Archaean Era. The ancient Earth was “just right”: It had a temperate climate in which biological life could thrive. That was long ago, however, and Earth has changed significantly since then — especially in terms of its atmosphere and oceans, as well as the distribution of other elements.
Earth’s atmosphere, for example, is currently composed mostly of oxygen, rather than the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Scientists think ancient Earth held on to more carbon than it does today. So when scientists draw their “grapes of old” diagrams of possible life-hosting environments, they have to take into account the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere — as well as other factors that have changed through the course of Earth’s history.
In the new study, Kresnow’s team searched through the protein sequences of about 2,500 species of bacteria, archaea, eukaryotes, viruses and all free-living organisms.
The scientists found 1,024 proteins that are shared by all forms of life, including bacteria, archaea, eukaryotes, and viruses — a reflection of the fact that all life evolved from the same common ancestor.
“The problem is that the bacteria-rich worlds are also the most likely worlds to be habitable,” said Michael Haberle, a planetary scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and another of the paper’s lead authors. “It
