Diess, whose appointment in September was welcomed by critics as a step forward for the union, sat down with UAW Local 22 in Detroit this week for initial conversations. He has also held talks with the union over plant closures in the past.
“We will not close any plants,” Diess told reporters last month. “The plants will stay open if there is something that they can do better and more efficiently in the German and our other plants.”
Diess was criticized over his previous comments on a potential plant closure in Tennessee. Volkswagen’s new boss said he only wanted to talk about innovation and productivity.
The Chattanooga plant, which employs about 6,000 workers, has long been considered a vital cog in the company’s global production strategy. The factory is a manufacturing powerhouse, churning out the Volkswagen Tiguan and a wide range of other vehicles.
While the German carmaker has faced criticism for its commitment to the Chattanooga plant and slow growth in the United States, it remains one of the company’s main engine houses in the country.

Top level talks are likely to take place over the next few weeks, as the union and management try to find common ground, according to sources familiar with the talks.

The union and the company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
